What We Do

Our year-round programming equips K-8 students with the skills they need to make academic progress, perform at or above grade level, graduate on time, and achieve long-term educational success.

Our Approach

Students enroll in GO during K-2nd grades, and participate in our high-quality, year-round programming through 8th grade. Each year, students receive 200+ hours of additional instruction over the summer and on Saturdays during the school year.

Academic Support

Through GO School, Weekday Intervention, and GO Summer, students build academic and social-emotional skills, reach grade-level proficiency, and thrive long-term.

GO School runs on Saturdays during the school year. Experienced teachers lead small-group instruction in math, literacy, and social-emotional learning, supported by trained adults for a 1:4 adult-to-student ratio. Our curriculum is designed to be rigorous, engaging, and responsive to students’ needs. Teachers use assessments to personalize instruction and track progress. We also integrate social-emotional skill-building into academic instruction to ensure students are building the non-academic skills they need to be successful in the classroom and beyond.

Students continue into GO Summer, a 5-week, full-day program designed to prevent summer learning loss. The program runs from July to August, serving underserved students at no cost to their families. Students participate in academic instruction in the mornings followed by afternoon enrichment classes designed to help explore interests and build confidence while deepening their connection to learning. Enrichment classes offer hands-on engagement in visual art, dance, theater, martial arts, and STEM activities. We also conduct field trips to extend learning beyond the classroom, and provide students with real-world experiences that reinforce their academic growth.

For students who need the most support, GO also offers high-impact tutoring to supplement core GO programming. Trained interventionists meet one-on-one or in small groups with students three times a week for 30-minute sessions, with a minimum of 20 sessions per student. GO provides this additional layer of support for students who are not demonstrating expected gains or have more significant gaps to close. All students who receive this targeted support also participate in our regular Saturday programming to ensure consistent support and sustain academic gains – this is key to maximizing the impact of the intervention program.

Family Support

The GO Families program is an essential pillar of our work, empowering families through personalized support, impactful workshops, and resource referrals.

We host year-round workshops on financial literacy, health, mental wellness, bullying prevention, IEP navigation, and more—with translation support to ensure all families can get the support they’re looking for.

NYC’s public school system can be challenging to navigate for some. We offer bridge programming for 5th and 8th graders and their families, guiding them through school applications and helping them find best-fit schools for long-term success.

Our Partnership Model

A group of students work together with instructors in a classroom.

Partnership is key to our approach.

Since GO began in 1968, our model has brought together a unique network of partnerships with schools, universities, and community organizations across NYC that  help students build academic skills and develop a love of learning.

We now partner with over 30 public schools, 6 host site schools, and numerous universities and community organizations in Lower Manhattan and Brooklyn to ensure student success.
