When Zhen immigrated to New York City at age four, he struggled to find a sense of belonging. As an English language learner in public school, he often felt invisible.
Zhen joined GO in first grade and stayed through the summer after seventh grade. With consistent academic support, caring teachers, and a strong sense of community, he built the confidence to speak up, take risks, and see himself as a capable learner.
At Swarthmore College, Zhen double majored in Economics and Educational Studies. He studied how learning environments impact student motivation and success, especially for those who feel unseen. “GO,” he says, “planted the seed”. It showed him what supportive, high- impact education looks like and laid the foundation for everything he has worked toward since.
