About GO Programming

GO Project provides free high-quality year-round academic support led by experienced teachers in math, literacy, and social-emotional learning. We run on Saturdays during the school year and for 5 weeks over the summer, and offer small group and 1:1 support to help students make academic gains. We accept new students from K-3rd grade, and once enrolled, students can stay with GO through their 8th grade year.

On average, our students show an additional 4 months of gains in Math and English Language Arts (ELA) each year. Committing to the entire year by participating in both GO School and GO Summer helps students achieve the greatest gains.

Applying to GO

You can complete our student application form online, and then email supporting documentation (listed below) to programs@goprojectnyc.org. Once submitted, our team will carefully review all applications and confirm acceptance via email.

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for the GO Project, students must:

Attend a New York City Public School.
Demonstrate that they are in need of additional academic support.
Be enrolled in kindergarten, first, second, or third grade (new students are not accepted after the third grade, with the exception of siblings).
Commit to active and consistent participation in both Saturday-morning school year program and the five-week summer program

Preference is given to families with financial need.

Required Documents

Teacher Evaluation Form (completed digitally by the child’s public school teacher).
Copy of the student’s most recent school report card.
Copy of the student’s most recent Individualized Education Plan (IEP), if applicable.
Student Physical (during GO Summer).

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to apply for GO Project every summer and school year?

Once your student is accepted and remains in good standing, they have a seat in the program. Every summer and school year, you will have to fill out registration information to make sure we have updated consent and emergency contact information.

Will my child be with other students their age?

Yes, students are in classes within their grade bands and ages.

Can I apply if my child has an IEP?

Yes, we accept students with IEPs. During the application process, we work to make sure that the GO Project classroom will be supportive for the students. GO Project doesn’t have paraprofessionals and cannot provide individualized services to students as indicated in IEPs. GO Classrooms average 15-18 students.

How do I submit my child’s updated IEP during the school year?

During the registration process, you will have the opportunity to upload your child’s updated IEP. You can always email a copy of the IEP to the campus manager or to programs@goprojectnyc.org.

Where is the program? Do I get to choose my location?

During the registration process, you will have the opportunity to select your preferred campus. These are the campus locations:

What is the curriculum?

GO Project draws from the Expeditionary Learning Curriculum for literacy. Students in K-2 focus on phonics through Fundations. Students in the upper grades focus on grammar. For math instruction, we use the Zearn platform. For students engaged in intervention, we use the Get More Math platform to support instruction and the SIPPs curriculum to support literacy intervention. GO Project’s curriculum is informed by the learning standards used by NYC public schools.

How are the standards selected for each grade?

GO Project is an academic support program for students who are behind academically. Our students usually start the program at least one grade level behind. Through our instruction, we focus on the skills and standards that are foundational for students in those specific grades, which will support them to access grade-level standards and instruction.

Does GO do any sort of test prep for school testing?

GO Project is an academic support program focused on math and literacy. We are not a test prep program. However, the knowledge, standards and skills are foundational to concepts students learn at their weekday schools.

When will the kindergarten application open?

The kindergarten classes start the program in January.

I have more than one child, can I enroll them both?

Yes, you can fill out an application for each student you wish to enroll.

What does a typical day at GO look like?

During the school year, students attend the program on Saturdays from 9am to 12pm. To support students’ academic growth, we also focus on socio-emotional growth and community building, so we start GO sessions with a community meeting and integrate socio-emotional practices. GO School is divided between literacy and math instruction.

Who does GO primarily serve?

GO Project serves students from public schools who are behind academically in the areas of literacy or math and with demonstrated financial need.

Which students are invited to additional intervention programs?

The students who are invited to intervention meet the following criteria: maintain consistent attendance during GO School, have participated in GO Project programs, and have an academic need according to GO Project-administered assessments.

When will I get my child’s testing result?

GO Project shares progress reports with families at the end of each cycle.

Does GO Project provide services such as OT, Speech, and PT?

GO Project does not provide individualized services.

Does GO provide school buses? MetroCards?

GO Project provides families with demonstrated financial need with MetroCards. GO Project does not provide bussing.

What are the family workshops?

The family workshops are provided during GO School Saturdays. The topics range and focus on ways to support your scholar. A calendar of topics is shared with families.

What supplies should my child bring?

Students do not need to bring supplies. We encourage students to bring a water bottle and a nut-free snack if they prefer. However, we provide snacks on Saturdays.

Can I only attend GO in the summer?

Participation at GO is year round. We do not offer summer-only programming.

How can I contact campus leadership?

During registration, you will receive the contact information for campus leadership members.

What programs are used to assess my student’s progress?

GO Project uses STAR Renaissance to assess growth and proficiency. To assess progress, GO Project teachers use classroom-based tools including DIBELS, MAZE and math pre and post tests.

What happens when they graduate the program?

GO Project programming is available to students up to the 8th grade. After the 8th grade, GO Project offers limited internship opportunities.

What makes the GO Project program unique (classroom model)?

GO Project classrooms are led by experienced Head Teachers in addition to student teachers and volunteers, which ensures that adults can work with students in small groups and differentiate for their needs. GO Project classrooms range in size between 15 and 18 students.

If my child is absent, will they lose their spot at GO?

To get the most out of programs, students should miss no more than 3 sessions. Please connect with your campus leadership team about any emergencies or concerns, as excessive absences will jeopardize students’ standing in the program.

Summer Specific

What is the summer program?

The program runs for 5 weeks during the summer with a focus on academics. Students also engage in enrichment activities and trips. The program is from 9am to 5pm with early drop off and late pick up options.

What field trips will they go on?

The trips vary by campus and will be shared with families during orientation. Trips location have included the Children’s Museum, Central Park Zoo, etc.

Are breakfast/lunch provided?

Families have the opportunity to opt in for lunch and breakfast. Families can also send their child with a nut-free meal or snack. GO Project provides students with nut-free snacks.

Are half-day options available?

Yes, half-day options are available.

When is the earliest that I can pick up my student?

We highly discourage pick ups outside of the dismissal times outside of emergencies or appointments, since it’s disruptive to instruction.
