Yumi joined the GO Project in Kindergarten. With English as her second language, reading and writing felt like a challenge and she struggled to participate in class. “The language barriers my family faced as immigrants was a challenge when trying to fit in. But GO teachers were there with me through it all.”
GO teachers worked with Yumi on-on-one to understand her learning needs. “They wanted to know me as an individual. They saw what made me special, shifting my relationship with learning.”
GO’s support gave Yumi a transformative approach toward learning. Her least favorite subject, math, became enjoyable after discovering new perspectives. When it came time for Yumi to go to high school, GO worked with Yumi and her family to ensure a successful transition.
“GO guided us through the complex middle school and high school applications, providing translation support and making sure I met deadlines and felt emotionally supported.”
Now, Yumi studies communications and marketing at the City College of New York where she also interns at an organization empowering Asian American youth – giving back to kids who face similar challenges she once did.
